Breaking Barriers in Trucking with FreeWorld | James Hazelton | Ep 25

Episode Details

In this episode of Miles and Mentors, James Hazelton from FreeWorld shares how his organization helps formerly incarcerated individuals build careers in trucking. Drawing from his own experiences, he explains how second-chance employment can transform lives and why FreeWorld is committed to reducing recidivism through job placement and long-term career support.

James’ path to trucking wasn’t traditional. After facing legal trouble and struggling to find work, he was given an opportunity in oilfield trucking by his brother-in-law. That break led to a CDL and a successful career in operations and recruiting. Now, he applies his experience at FreeWorld, a nonprofit focused on getting justice-impacted individuals into the trucking industry with structured training, job placement, and ongoing support.

FreeWorld provides CDL training at no cost to participants, a weekly stipend during schooling, and career services for up to five years. The program also offers resume coaching, interview preparation, and free transportation to and from work. Graduates gain access to a network of past participants who provide mentorship and guidance as they start their careers.

Despite FreeWorld’s success, many carriers are hesitant to hire individuals with records due to liability concerns and insurance restrictions. James and his team work to educate employers on the value of hiring skilled, motivated drivers who deserve a second chance. He stresses that success in trucking requires careful career planning, strong mentorship, and treating a CDL as a long-term investment rather than just a job.

Since its founding in 2020, FreeWorld has expanded rapidly, with plans to grow nationwide and extend its reach beyond trucking into other industries like diesel mechanics. James encourages employers, mentors, and donors to support the mission and highlights that FreeWorld does not charge carriers for placements. He also notes that hundreds of CDL graduates are ready to work.
