Revolutionizing Logistics with Alvys TMS | Nick Darman | Ep 24

Episode Details

In this episode of Miles and Mentors, Nick Darman, founder and CEO of Alvys, shares his journey from trucking entrepreneur to building one of the most innovative TMS (Transportation Management System) platforms in the industry. Nick discusses how his personal experience running a trucking company led him to identify major inefficiencies in logistics software, inspiring him to create a system designed specifically to help carriers optimize their operations and scale effectively.

Nick’s introduction to trucking began in 2004 when he started dispatching loads to help his father’s trucking business while studying economics at Georgia State. This hands-on experience gave him insight into the challenges small carriers face in managing freight, finances, and operational workflows. After a brief career in investment banking at JPMorgan, he returned to trucking with a stronger understanding of financial management, which shaped his approach to business operations.

Recognizing a major gap in the technology available to carriers, Nick set out to build a better TMS. His goal was to develop a system that seamlessly integrates dispatching, accounting, compliance, and brokerage management into a single platform. Unlike traditional TMS solutions that force companies to manage assets and brokerage operations separately, Alvys introduces a hybrid architecture that allows users to oversee all freight operations in one place, reducing inefficiencies and improving profitability.

One of the biggest challenges in trucking is balancing cash flow while maintaining long-term financial stability. Nick emphasizes the importance of proper accounting processes, a lesson he carried over from his time in finance. He explains how many trucking businesses struggle because they focus solely on revenue rather than tracking profitability and managing costs effectively. By incorporating automated accounting and invoicing features, Alvys helps carriers maintain financial clarity and avoid common pitfalls that lead to business failures.

Nick also highlights how technology is transforming logistics, including the role of AI in optimizing dispatching, pricing, and load management. However, he warns against the hype surrounding AI, stressing that only systems with accurate data can provide meaningful insights. He believes the true test for AI in logistics will be whether it delivers real ROI and improves decision-making for carriers.

Since its launch in 2020, Alvys has grown rapidly, experiencing a tenfold increase in adoption over the past two years. The company’s success is driven by its commitment to building a platform that not only streamlines operations but also helps carriers scale efficiently. Looking ahead, Nick envisions Alvys continuing to evolve by focusing on the needs of small and mid-sized carriers, ensuring they have the tools to compete in an increasingly complex logistics landscape.
